*****2016 RECAP*****

Hello everyone! I know I've been away from here for quite some time. My apologies. I wanted to fill you in on a couple of my 2016 highlights.

In August I published my first book. Book one in my Operation Space Cats series. I learned a lot from the experience! How is it I still have more to learn, lol?

At the end of November I took a position as a Book Reviewer for Readers' favorite. I'm enjoying reading and reviewing so much I decided I would start sharing my reviews here.

I look forward to a new year of writing, publishing, reading and reviewing. With that thought in mind I thought I'd state my goals for 2017. But I'll save that for another post. Coming soon!

Saturday, May 28, 2016

I know things have been quiet around here since our big February 'Love is in the Heart' contest of 2016. But I have some new things coming up, and I'm excited to share the news.

 Hooray! The release of the Space Kitties 2 anthology is just around the corner, a book I'm happy to be a part of. The second story in my Operation Space Cats series is one of the stories that won the contest and will be featured alongside some other great author's stories.

I'll be conducting my first interview in a while with one of my fellow meowsome co-author's. Also, we're kicking off Space Kitties 2 with a FB party, and a blog tour. There's sure to be some purrific prizes and lots of fun, so I hope you'll all get to join in!:)

I'll be announcing the date for the FB book release party next time, so stay tuned for de'tails'!:)

THIS INTERVIEW IS WITH OUR FIRST PLACE WINNER, FAITH POTTS FOR HER STORY, 'LOVE NEEDS NO WORDS'.

Love, Emoji, Hearts, Sign Language

And here's a pic of our winning author holding her contest prize. Faith said she thinks this book will be a great help to her future writing.

CONTEST QUESTIONS

Lesa- HOW DID YOU FIND OUT ABOUT THE ~LOVE IS IN THE HEART~ CONTEST?

Faith- Through Raechel's blog actually! I saw her post about the contest (https://godspeculiartreasurerae.wordpress.com/2015/12/16/love-is-in-the-heart-writing-contest/) back in December. I thought the contest sounded like fun, and here I am!

Lesa- I’m so glad you decided to enter the contest!

IS THIS THE FIRST WRITING CONTEST YOU’VE ENTERED, OR ARE YOU A SEASONED PRO AT THIS? OR ARE YOU SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN?

Faith- This question made me laugh; I'm definitely not a seasoned pro! This was the third writing contest I've entered, so I guess that puts me somewhere in between.

Lesa- Is this your first win?

Faith- Yes, it is!

WHAT’S YOUR EXPERIENCE BEEN LIKE? AND WOULD YOU ENTER FUTURE CONTESTS?

Faith- My experience has been great. Everything related to the contest was very well-managed and organized. I would absolutely enter future contests!

Lesa- Thank you! It takes time and commitment, but I enjoyed hosting this contest so much I’m going to do it again! And I’m glad you would be up for it.

YOUR STORY IS BEAUTIFUL! WHAT WAS THE MOTIVATION BEHIND YOUR WINNING ENTRY?

Faith- Originally, the idea for this story came from The Waltons. I was watching the show with my family one evening, and there was a young mute man on it. (The Nightwalker, season 5 episode 6). Of course that's the only show he's on, but I kept thinking of what his story could be tailored to. A couple of days later, I was thinking about sign language and the sign for "I love you". From those moments came Daniel, Shay, and their story. :)

Lesa- I love hearing ‘the story behind the story’. I never would have guessed the idea came from an episode of the Waltons. That’s neat!

WRITING QUESTIONS
Travel, Notebook, Cowhide, Coffee Color

I FIND WRITER’S WRITE FOR MANY REASONS. WHY DO YOU WRITE? IS WRITING A HOBBY, OR SOMETHING YOU’D LIKE TO DO ON THE SIDE/PART-TIME, OR SOMETHING YOU WANT TO TURN INTO A FULL-TIME CAREER?

Faith- I write because once I started I couldn't stop. I write for the beauty of life as one of God's beautiful creations. I write for all those stories yet to be told.
Right now, it's just a hobby and something I enjoy, but I could see this one day turning into a part-time venture. ;)

Lesa- I love all the reasons you write! As a writer I can relate to them.

HOW DOES YOUR FAITH IMPACT YOUR WRITING?

Faith- I try to let Christ's light shine through me and the stories I create. I want there to be a moral, a reason, a lesson, in each thing I write. :)

Lesa- Me too. Those reasons are the best!

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE GENRE(S) TO WRITE?

Faith- Fiction/historical fiction is my favorite to write and read. :)

Lesa- Awesome!!!

ARE YOU AN ORGANIZED PLOTTER, A FREE-STYLING PANTSER, OR A PLANSTER, WHICH IS A COMBINATION OF THE TWO?

Faith- Hmm...I guess I'm a planster. I'm not an organized plotter or a free-styling pantser. I do usually have most of the plot laid out before I really set in to work on a story. :)

ARE YOU WORKING ON ANY OTHER PROJECTS YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH US?

Faith- I'm currently writing a historical novel set in the early 1940s. I've been working on it off and on for close to a year and it's my favorite of my many WIPs. :)

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE FOR WRITERS?

Faith- I don't know that I have a favorite, but I really like this one.
"Beautiful writing isn't about the words we use. It's about the emotions we evoke."

Lesa- That’s a great one! I can picture it on a poster or on a coffee mug.

PERSONAL QUESTIONS

Lesa- WHAT ARE YOUR OTHER INTERESTS OR HOBBIES?

Faith- Besides writing, I enjoy pottery, reading, camping, kayaking, sewing, and photographing random, everyday things. :)
Jugs, Pottery, Fragile, Earthen Material

Lesa- Sounds like fun! I often find writers have more than one creative outlet.

ARE YOU AN INTROVERT OR AN EXTRAVERT?

Faith- I'm an introvert all the way. Making conversation can sometimes sound downright nightmarish.

Lesa- You’re in great company here then.:)

Faith- Good to hear!

WHAT ARE SOME THINGS ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?
Recycle, Green, Earth, Environment
- Meet all my blogger friends.
- Write and publish a good book.
- Travel the world. Starting with all 50 States and Washington D.C., then Germany and all of Europe!

Lesa- I’d love to meet you too.:) I hope you get to fulfill them all!

HOW DO YOU WANT TO BE REMEMBERED?

Faith- As a faithful follower of Christ, a girl who always had a smile on her face and an encouraging word to offer. :)

Lesa- :):):)

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE SCRIPTURES AND/OR LIFE QUOTES?

Faith-
Scriptures:
1 Peter 5:7 -- Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

1 John 1:9 -- If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Isaiah 40:31 -- But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

IS THERE ANY SPECIAL OR RANDOM THING YOU WANT TO SHARE ABOUT YOURSELF?

Faith- How about a random one – I love heights. I would happily spend all day on the roof or in a tree. :)
Virginia Live Oak, Southern Live Oak

Lesa- That’s cool!

FUN QUESTIONS!

SNOW OR SUN? Snow. But a sunny snow day if I have that option. ;)

NEW YORK OR CALIFORNIA? California! I want to visit the Pacific Ocean.

ALASKA OR FLORIDA?

Alaska. I've been to Florida before. ;)

Lesa- That’s neat. I was born in Alaska, but I’ve never been to Florida, lol.

Faith- Really, wow, that's awesome!

FAVORITE PLACE YOU WANT TO VISIT?

*returns to bucket list question* I'd start with Hawaii. Or, of places I've already seen, I'd like to return to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. :)

PIZZA OR TACOS? How about both? I like both, but pizza is a favorite.

Lesa- Pizza or tacos? What was I thinking? That really wasn’t a very fair question, was it, lol?

Faith- Haha, I guess not. LOL

BURGERS OR STEAK? Burgers. From Five Guys, preferably.

Hamburger, Platter, Meat, Beef, Food

Lesa- I’ve been wanting to try that place.:)

Faith- Best burger EVER! And they don't just say that either. ;)

CHOCOLATE OR ICE-CREAM? Ice cream!! Make that coffee ice cream.

FAVORITE FOOD(S)? Pizza, spinach-artichoke dip and macaroni & cheese, to name a few.

PINK OR PURPLE? Purple

BLUE OR GREEN? Blue

BROWN OR GRAY? Gray

FAVORITE COLOR? Just about any shade of blue. :)

IN HONOR OF VALENTINE’S DAY… FLOWERS OR CANDY? Candy! Preferably those little valentine conversation hearts.

WOULD YOU RATHER SPEND THE DAY SWIMMING WITH THE DOLPHINS, GOING HORSEBACK RIDING, OR ICE-SKATING?

Horse, Horse Show, Horse Head

Well, I've never been swimming with the dolphins or ice-skating. I have been horseback riding (once!) and I loved it. So I guess I'd go horseback riding again. :)

WOULD YOU RATHER OWN AN ISLAND RETREAT, A LOG CABIN IN THE MOUNTAINS, OR A POSH CONDO IN THE CITY?

An island retreat sounds amazing and exotic, but I think I would eventually get tired of it. A log cabin in the mountains sounds more my style. :)

It’s been a joy talking to you, Faith and getting to know you a little better. Thank you for doing the interview, and for creating the 2016 ~Love is in the Heart~ badges. I’m wishing you all HIS best!

Faith- Thank you so much for having me here, Lesa! This contest has been so much fun for me and I'm looking forward to anything upcoming here at Happily Indie After. :)

Lesa- You're welcome! And that's great to hear!:)

THIS INTERVIEW IS WITH OUR SECOND PLACE WINNER, RAECHEL LENORE FOR HER STORY, 'NO CAGE TOO STRONG'.

And here's a pic of our LOVE-ly author holding her contest prize. Raechel mentioned she loves her new journal and says she can't wait to fill it!

CONTEST QUESTIONS

HOW DID YOU FIND OUT ABOUT THE ~LOVE IS IN THE HEART~ CONTEST?

Raechel- It was through the facebook group for writers: "Christian Woman Critique Partners and Beta Readers" :)

Lesa- I'm so glad you're one of your awesome members.:)

IS THIS THE FIRST WRITING CONTEST YOU’VE ENTERED, OR ARE YOU A SEASONED PRO AT THIS? OR ARE YOU SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN?

Raechel- I'd say somewhere in between. I think this is my second or third writing contest I've ever entered - first that I placed in. :)

Lesa- You’re learning all the writing ropes then.:)

WHAT’S YOUR EXPERIENCE BEEN LIKE? AND WOULD YOU ENTER FUTURE CONTESTS?

Raechel- I absolutely would enter future contests, God-willing! It has been such a lovely experience and the entrants I had the pleasure of 'meeting' are all fantastic writers and people! And most of all, you Lesa, have made this so enjoyable. :)

Lesa- Aww… Thank you, Raechel.:) I’m glad this has been such a wonderful experience for you. And I agree. I’ve met some wonderful people through this contest.

YOUR STORY IS AMAZING! WHAT WAS THE MOTIVATION BEHIND YOUR WINNING ENTRY?

Raechel- Thank you! I was excited to begin a new story for this contest and decided to use on of the many "Pins" I've collected on Pinterest - it was time to put some of them to good use! :) And then God completely took over and wrote the story that is "No Cage Too Strong"!

Lesa- Don't you love it when he does that?:) Awesome!!!

WRITING QUESTIONS

I FIND WRITER’S WRITE FOR MANY REASONS. WHY DO YOU WRITE? IS WRITING A HOBBY, OR SOMETHING YOU’D LIKE TO DO ON THE SIDE/PART-TIME, OR SOMETHING YOU WANT TO TURN INTO A FULL-TIME CAREER?

Raechel- There's a quote I like - "Writing is like breathing; if I didn't, I'd die" - and while I wouldn't die (hehe), it is a part of me. I'm not sure it would be a full-time career, because I could never (unless God wanted it) write under deadlines and whatnot, so I suppose it is closer to a hobby, but a very strong one!

Lesa- I can understand that. Writing is a part of me too.:)

HOW DOES YOUR FAITH IMPACT YOUR WRITING?

Raechel- My faith is my writing, to put it simply. It is God who has given me the gift to write and so my whole purpose is to glorify Him in it and point others to Him and His amazing healing! :)

Lesa- Well said!:) We need more of this kind of writing.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE GENRE(S) TO WRITE?

Raechel- A fantasy-medieval blend, with no magic and little actual 'history'. I'm not a great researcher, so I love the freedom fantasy gives, and I love the medieval feel to stories, so I write somewhere between the two.

ARE YOU AN ORGANIZED PLOTTER, A FREE-STYLING PANTSER, OR A PLANSTER, WHICH IS A COMBINATION OF THE TWO?

Raechel- Probably a Planster...I sometimes know the general plot of things, but for the most part I "fly by the seat of my pants" - I trust God to lead me through it and He always does!

Lesa- Oh, he will. He's done it for me too.:)
ARE YOU WORKING ON ANY OTHER PROJECTS YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH US?

Raechel- I always have several writing projects in the mix. :) I have a Beauty and the Beast retelling that I am hoping and praying to self-publish this year. It is going through the beginning editing stages, but I have high hopes of this being the year!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE FOR WRITERS?Typewriter, Antique, Old, Machine, Mechanical, Metal

Raechel- "Writing isn't hard - you just sit at a typewriter and bleed" - that is one of my favourites, by Ernest Hemmingway. To me, it just shows the amount of life and love you pour into a story.

Lesa- I've heard that one. It's so true!

PERSONAL QUESTIONS

WHAT ARE YOUR OTHER INTERESTS OR HOBBIES?

Raechel- Reading! I am an avid reader and I just adore books. Reading and writing are at my very core :) Besides that, I enjoy playing with my younger sister (you're never too old to play!) letter-writing, and knife/tomahawk throwing, so name a few.

Tomahawk, Hatchet, Axe, Indian, Weapon, Western

Lesa- Knife/tomahawk throwing? Sounds fun!

ARE YOU AN INTROVERT OR AN EXTRAVERT?

Raechel- Absolutely an introvert. I don't do "peopling" very well at all. :P

Lesa- ‘Peopling’. I like that! As I mentioned to Faith, you’re in good company here.:)
WHAT ARE SOME THINGS ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?

Raechel- Be published (!), become a wife and mother and adopt children, and fulfil the desire God has placed on my heart - become a missionary in India.

Lesa- I’ve always had a heart for missionaries. I hope he will fulfill all your dreams.:)

HOW DO YOU WANT TO BE REMEMBERED?

Raechel- As one who forgot herself and was competely filled up with Christ.  And you know, maybe the gal that found and rode a dragon? ;) Hehe, I can dream.

Lesa- :):):)

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE SCRIPTURES AND/OR LIFE QUOTES?

Raechel- I have many, many favourite Scripture verses :) Psalm 27 is one of my favourite passages.

As for a quote...I recently read this one and love it: "I will tell you the secret: God has had all that there was of me. There have been men with greater brains than I, even with greater opportunities, but from the day I got the poor of London on my heart and caught a vision of what Jesus Christ could do with me and them, on that day I made up my mind that God should have all of William Booth there was. And if there is anything of power in the Salvation Army, it is because God has had all the adoration of my heart, all the power of my will, and all the influence of my life." -William Booth

Lesa- Love it!

IS THERE ANY SPECIAL OR RANDOM THING YOU WANT TO SHARE ABOUT YOURSELF?

Raechel- Hmmm...well, I'm a How To Train Your Dragon enthuisiast. :D

FUN QUESTIONS!

SNOW OR SUN? Snow!!! I LOVE the snow and the cold. Winter is by far my favourite time of year.

NEW YORK OR CALIFORNIA? New York - I would love to meet the gal who became my very first penpal when I was 11 and is still my dear friend :)

ALASKA OR FLORIDA? Alaska. Cold!

FAVORITE PLACE YOU WANT TO VISIT? Oh that's hard...I want to go so many places! PA would be my first stop - that's where my bestie lives. :)

PIZZA OR TACOS? Tough one...pizza :)

BURGERS OR STEAK? Burgers most definitely!

CHOCOLATE OR ICE-CREAM? I'm going to have to go with chocolate on this one - I am a huge fan of chocolate.

Chocolate Cupcake, Whipped Cream

Lesa- Me too!

FAVORITE FOOD? Hmm...Cheeseburgers probably...there are many nummy things though! :D

PINK OR PURPLE? Pink. :) I've never really been a girly-girl, but I do love pink!

BLUE OR GREEN? Green - a forest green, or army green. I really love those two colours.

Lesa- Good to know!:) Can you tell?

BROWN OR GRAY? Brown.

FAVORITE COLOR? Hot pink, and forest green.

IN HONOR OF VALENTINE’S DAY… FLOWERS OR CANDY? Candy, always. Flowers are beautiful, but candy is delightful :D

WOULD YOU RATHER SPEND THE DAY SWIMMING WITH THE DOLPHINS, GOING HORSEBACK RIDING, OR ICE-SKATING?
Girl, Ice, Skate, Skating, Snow Flakes

Ice-skating! I enjoy ice-skating very much.

WOULD YOU RATHER OWN AN ISLAND RETREAT, A LOG CABIN IN THE MOUNTAINS, OR A POSH CONDO IN THE CITY? A log cabin in the mountains. That would be so beautiful. :)

I’ve enjoyed talking to you, and getting to know you a little better. Thank you for doing the interview, Raechel! I’m wishing you all HIS best!

Thank you so very much, Lesa! This has been a tremendous amount of fun, and I really appreciate all the work you put into every area of it! Many blessings upon you!!

Aww... Thank you, Raechel!

~LOVE IS THE THE HEART CONTEST~

Heart, Letter, Love, Mail, Valentine, Romantic

Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone! It's time to reveal the winner of the ~Love is in the Heart Contest~! Yipee!!!

I want to thank all of you for participating. Afterall, there wouldn’t have been a contest without you! And I so enjoyed reading through all of your stories. We have some great talent here.

And now for the winner! This was a very hard decision, and the top two stories were very close. So close I had to give a first and second place. Our ~Love is in the Heart contest~ winner is...

LOVE NEEDS NO WORDS, BY FAITH POTTS

Congratulations, Faith! What a love-ly story you submitted! I’ve added my comments below. I’ll email you the information so you can select a prize from my ‘Treasure Trove for writer’s’ list! And you can let me know if you’d rather have me beta read or critique your story.

And second place goes to-

NO CAGE TOO STRONG, BY RACHEL LENORE

You wrote a beautiful story, Raechel! I commented on it below. Please e-mail me your address so I can send you a ‘surprise’ prize as well.

Thanks to everyone else! Judging is so hard! I considered giving a third place, but it would have been a tie. (You guys made it so hard for me!) And with so few entries I decided to go with two this time.

I’ve won and lost contests, so I know how it feels not to win, but please don’t give up! I hope you’ll be back for more as I mention future contests below. Also, will everyone please leave a comment to let me know you saw this? Thank you.

I received seven entries in all, and I want to share with you some thoughts on your stories. I hope you’ll find them encouraging! You’re welcome to share them on your blog, or wherever else you’d like.

I’d love to come up with some kind of contest badge you could post with it showing you’ve participated, and also a special one for the winner. I’m not real technical though. Is anyone good in this area who would be interested in making one up and sharing it? I know there are free sites for this. I would so appreciate it, and it would be a great promotion for future contests! Please let me know if you have the time and the talent, and want to do this. Assuming these contests grow bigger I’ll probably need more (and different kinds of) help in the future. Thanks!

I listed these in the alphabetical order of your stories. Here we go!

Judge’s comments…

Beauty & the Beast retelling, by Soleil Bourden  ~Creative Retelling~

I think it’s grand how the author put her own spin on this classic and much-loved fairytale. She chose to do a very creative take on the beast. A fire-breathing dragon! Yikes! Should the Princess avoid the smoke and run away, or should she let the Lord guide her steps, no matter where he might lead? I was cheering for this Beauty & Beast the whole way through!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Beauty in the Storm, by Jesseca Wheaton  ~Touching Tearjerker~
Grab the kleenex for this heart-wrenching story! This author shares the message of hope and forgiveness in a powerful way through believable characters and faith challenging issues. The love of God glistens in the reader’s tears as they flip through the pages.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’ll be Home for Christmas, by Jesseca Dawn   ~The Merriest Message Of All~

Ah! A lovely, heart-felt story indeed. The author shines the spotlight on celebrating the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ. The main character learns this truth through well-placed, touching dialogue. The message of this story comes through loud and clear!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Love needs no words, by Faith Potts   ~Endearing Tale~
I love the author’s unique approach to our contest theme! This sweet story follows two hearts who once shared a special friendship until one moves away. Years later they meet again, and find that neither time nor distance can quell the connection of the heart. Will disability be their breaking point? Or can they overcome this trial together? I couldn’t wait to find out!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Muffin and the Bird, by Aletha Bakke   ~Fun & Fluff, just the way I like it!~

This story resonated with me as a fellow cat-lover. I love stories of cute, cuddly, and playful cats, and this author doesn’t disappoint. I so enjoyed this little tale, and the way the author builds anticipation. Will Muffin be a good kitty? Will our catacter’s kitty heart fill with love, or will she have birdie stew for dinner? This story is purrific!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
No Cage too Strong, by Raechel Lenore   ~No Greater Love~
I can’t think of a more fitting theme for this contest than that of a new believer placing their heart in the Savior’s hands. Love at it’s finest! This author’s story holds the message that cannot be shared enough. Can the main character learn to trust? It’s a memorable story that tugged at my heart-strings.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To be loved by the King, by Heather Culler  ~Warm & Wonderful~

This is one of those stories that should become an instant classic. The storyline follows a young girl whose family life is falling apart. The author brings in help in the most clever of ways. A deeply moving tale of love, repentance, and hope awaits it’s reader. May the king be praised!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I hope everyone enjoyed being a part of this contest. I know I’ve learned a few things from running my first self-hosted contest. One of the goals of my blog is to host more of these in the future. That said, I’m having some health issues so we’ll have to wait and see. God-willing I’ll hold a summer or fall contest (probably summer). So please stay tuned for that. Also I’m thinking of making it a picture prompt or story prompt writing contest next time rather than a theme again. Oh, and I’d appreciate a prayer for healing. Thanks so much again for being a part of this LOVE-ly event!
